The Economist, holiday edition
I would recommend reading The Economist (and its many blogs) anytime, but if you have to read it only once a year, let it be the holiday double issue. In addition to the usual current affairs, you are treated with a variety of subjects ranging from Belgian beer to Chinese football.
The articles are longish, but well worth your time.
